- Home of the Rebels -
The Southland Coop Centre opened in September 2022, the $18 million dollar recreation facility features an NHL-sized hockey rink, walking track, teen and kids centre, fully licensed concession, rock climbing wall, pickle ball-sized gym, simulator room that is pre-loaded with about 30 games including hockey and golf and a Lakota First Nation Education and Interpretive Centre. The exterior of the rink features a large video screen to be used for tailgate parties for Saskatchewan Roughriders game and other outdoor events.
The facility was designed and constructed after the Merlis Belsher Place in Saskatoon. Belsher is originally from McCord, Saskatchewan, a small community an hour southwest of Assiniboia.
The Southland Coop Centre replaces the existing arena the Civic Centre which was built back in 1958.
Assiniboia Civic Centre
- Former Home of the Southern Rebels -
The Civic Centre was the home to the Southern Rebels, Assiniboia Minor Hockey and Figure Skating during the winter. In the summer the facility was turned into a Summer Recreation Centre. The Civic Centre went through many upgrades and improvements over the years which kept the facility in excellent condition. Many of the improvements included: the Alumazorb Ceiling, New Sound System and Showers and Bathrooms in each dressing room.
Over the years our community hosted many large tournaments and events in the Civic Centre. In the 1970's and 1980's, Assiniboia Minor Hockey would host their annual Easter Tournaments, comprising of 16 Bantam and 16 Midget teams. From 1986 to 1992, our community was home to the Southern Rebels Senior Hockey Club and had several notable successes in their history. Our facility also has some noteworthy attendance figures that can be mentioned:
- Apr. 3 -5 1992 Allan Cup Western Final - 3 game average (687)
- Mar. 31, 1990 SAHA Sr. "A" vs Eston - 1293 attendance
- Jan. 3 & 5, 1989 Team USA Jr. - 892 attendance
Team Sweden Jr. - 1002 attendance
The Civic Centre was the home of the 2001-02 Western Canadian Junior B Championship (Keystone Cup) which was played from April 11-14 of 2002. The tournament was a success as record crowds were witnessed at each game played throughout the 4 day tournament including the Gold medal game and Bronze medal game which saw both game attendance near the 1000 mark..
The Civic Centre also hosted several Provincial Curling Bonspiels and had sold-out crowds.
