Assiniboia serves primarily as an agriculturally based trading area in all directions. Commercial development in Assiniboia has been exceptionally strong in the last three decades. Assiniboia is a small town with character, with a wide Main Street offering a wide variety of shops and stops. Residential areas are also well maintained and well treed. Assiniboia is a beautiful town in any season with activity all year long.

History
The Town of Assiniboia is named after the old district of Assiniboia that was formed in the Northwest Territories in 1882. The original Northwest Territories' District of Assiniboia, which encompassed southern Saskatchewan from south of Saskatoon to the United States border, was named after the Assiniboine Indians. When Saskatchewan was formed into a province in 1905 it absorbed most of Assiniboia.

Assiniboia was incorporated as a Village on December 22, 1912 and incorporated as a town in 1913, the year in which the population of the town soared from 400 to 1400.

Town lots put on sale by the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) on October 12, 1912, which was then building a branch line through the wilderness of Southern Saskatchewan. Several of the boys stood in line overnight to get their lots. All the original 980 lots were sold by January 16, 1913. Over a quarter of a million bushels of grain was handled from the new centre by five elevators, all constructed in one year.

The word Assiniboia is Saulteaux (Plains Ojibwa) meaning 'One who cooks with heated stones'.
Economic Information
Assiniboia sustains a wide variety of businesses ranging from dress shops and craft stores to several agricultural equipment dealerships and manufacturing companies. It is through this diversity that the community and surrounding area can support our growing economy.

Located in the heart of the southern part of Saskatchewan, Assiniboia has an advantage as a central location. Agricultural activity is what Assiniboia thrives on, whether it be calving and seeding in the spring, or branding and harvest in the fall. The Assiniboia district can support this diversity of activity because of two high throughput terminals that handle the majority of the grain in the region. The terminal is conveniently located within the Town's industrial park, which is home to one of the nations' largest livestock auction yards. Farm implement dealerships, grain storage sales, and equipment rentals as well as the auction yards are all located within the industrial park.

Along with agriculture, Assiniboia has a manufacturing sector unlike many other communities of equal size. This sector also ranges in variety and complexity, from grain bin construction to pond/dugout aerators and custom welding projects. Each enterprise offers a unique service and caters to both ag-related and non ag-related sectors.

Assiniboia has a unique retail and service atmosphere offering all the amenities of the city. From grocery to pharmacy and clothing to gifts, Assiniboia has it. With friendly sales service, the retail sector is there to meet your needs.

Assiniboia has a population of approximately 2,800 with two surrounding Rural Municipalities (RMs) adding approximately 800 more. The town itself takes pride in its daycare centre, hospital, brand new community complex, year-round recreation facilities, and a volunteer network like none other.
Attractions
The National Historic Site of St. Victor Park is located just south of town and is home to a beautiful park hidden in a valley between rolling grain fields. One can visit petroglyphs, hike the boardwalk, and enjoy the picnic area. The park is also being developed as a butterfly sanctuary.

A stop at the local museum will take you back in time to pioneer days gone by. The large antique, restored vehicle collection will certainly pique visitors' interests.

Assiniboia takes great pride in the new Prince of Wales Cultural and Recreation Centre; this state-of-the-art facility includes a theatre, curling arena, auditorium, and is the new home of the Southeast Regional College.

Many residents of Assiniboia take great pride in the Regional Park Golf Course located just east of town. This is a nine-hole golf course offering lessons, a new clubhouse, and organized leagues for most age groups.

Assiniboia also has Exhibition Grounds which is host to the annual Demolition Derby and Tuff Truck Competition the July long weekend.

Health and Education
Assiniboia has a well-established health care system with dedicated professionals available year round. Along with three family physicians, we have a chiropractor, two dentists, a denturist, an optometrist, excellent paramedic and ambulance facility and staff, and two registered massage therapists. The 17-bed Assiniboia Union hospital is the only hospital between Moose Jaw and the International Border. It is fully staffed with an intensive care unit, emergency facility, and full laboratory services including blood analysis and x-ray. Located within the hospital is the Pioneer Wing where 10 beds have been reserved for people requiring extra care (level 3-4). As well the Ross-Payant Centennial Home is also an elderly care facility, which also provides level 3-4 care.

Additional medical services include home care, podiatry services, public health, Health Promotion and education services, adult day services, wellness centres, addictions counsellors, social workers, placement services (night or day), physiotherapy, dietary services, laundry services, outreach, and lifeline services (a personal alert system).

For post-secondary education the Southeast Regional College offers some full-time courses as well as special interest classes like painting and photography.

The Red Coat Trail School Division is a large district extending approximately 40 miles in either direction. The Division has remained on a five-day school week, with a full staff that provides almost any extracurricular activity imaginable. From drama to football and cheerleading, or minor sports leagues, Assiniboia teachers and other community volunteers make it happen.

Quality of Life
Assiniboia came into existence with the building of the railway. With the trains came pioneers who brought their traditions and faiths. Assiniboia has a wide variety of church denominations.

Assiniboia has a volunteer fire department to provide emergency service any time of the day or night. The volunteers consist of 11 men from Assiniboia and its district.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) has a station located within the Town of Assiniboia, with the detachment servicing a large district surrounding Assiniboia.
